The Best of Both Worlds
Currently available in various formats on both the Porsche Cayenne and the Porsche Panamera, E-Hybrid models have surpassed sales expectations since the first generation back in 2013. Today, both the Cayenne E-Hybrid and the Panamera E-Hybrid have been redesigned and improved using what Porsche engineers learned with the iconic Porsche 918 Spyder.
The core of E-Hybrid is always a modern and quite advanced combustion engine paired with a highly efficient electric motor. Porsche engineers use the latter’s instant torque to deliver better performance off the line while also using it to independently power either the Cayenne or Panamera for a set distance without needing any fuel.
All-electric range varies from model to model. Total range in the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is rated at 44 kilometers while the Panamera E-Hybrid can reach 50 kilometers depending on how you drive it and outside conditions.
Various driving modes allow the driver to adjust the electric motor’s input. You can run strictly on electric power alone, or inversely preserve the battery for future electric-only use. Both the Panamera and Cayenne E-Hybrid models can also harness the energy generated by braking to replenish the 14.1-kWh battery as you drive.
In the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, the electric motor is paired with a 2.9-liter, twin-turbo V6 with 330 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque which is good enough to reach 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. Total combined output is 456 horsepower.
The 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid has roughly the same setup except calls upon at 3.0-liter turbocharged V6. Total combined output is rated at 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. You’ll get to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds.
The monster of the group is the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. The same electric motor is paired with a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V8 for a total output of 680 horsepower which will rocket you to 100 km/h in a mind-bending 3.4 seconds. Because the electric motor delivers its torque to all four wheels as soon as the right pedal is pushed down, there’s not a hint of turbo lag in any of the E-Hybrid models.
