That’s not a knock on the Porsche 911, but more of a testament to how incredible the new Porsche 718 Boxster is.
The Porsche 718 family breaks down into two models: the Boxster and the Cayman. The Boxster is the roadster of the lineup, a two-seat drop-top with a mid-engine layout that provides perfect driving dynamics, but also a surprising amount of cargo space for such a small vehicle.
With the engine positioned just behind the driver, there’s room for a luggage compartment where a normal trunk would be, but there’s also an additional spot up front. The Porsche 718 Boxster made the switch to turbocharging in its last redesign and never looked back. You won’t find a six-cylinder engine in the Boxster anymore. Instead, drivers will enjoy the smooth and linear power delivery of a range of turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
Turbocharged four-bangers have numerous advantages for 718 Boxster owners. They provide more low-end torque which is what you want in such a small, perfectly balanced car. They are also lighter and smaller which fits the 718 Boxster’s personality to a tee. Power is improved, and weight is lowered. That’s the perfect recipe for a truly unique driving experience.
The entry-level Porsche 718 Boxster gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque which can be paired to either a six-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Getting to 100 km/h requires only 5.1 seconds.
The Porsche 718 Boxster S replaces the 2.0-liter four-cylinder by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque. The same gearbox options are available, but the added power gets the driver of a 718 Boxster S to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.
And then we have the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS. It also packs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo, but with 365 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque. With a louder exhaust note, more dialed-in tuning and a range of differentiating esthetic features, the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS is the sportiest model in an already very sporty two-seat performance vehicle lineup.
