People often ask me what it’s like to work at Porsche Centre Calgary. "It must be like working in a candy store every day, right?" They aren't wrong! Seeing a Porsche is always a special occasion, but when I first gazed at our April Car of the Month, it felt like finding the legendary chocolate bar with the golden ticket attached.
The 2026 911 Spirit 70 is more than just a limited-edition model; it is a masterpiece of the "Icons of Cool" Heritage Design Strategy. What makes this car so important to me personally is the soul behind it. I’ve always believed that every car tells a story and Porsche is the ultimate storyteller. The Spirit 70 doesn't just reflect on the past, it teleports you back to the groovy, high-energy era of the 1970s to early 80s, while keeping its feet firmly planted in the future.
When you look at the 911, you realize there are infinite ways to make one your own. But the Spirit 70, feels like Porsche took every perfect customization and wrapped them into one complete, breathtaking package. Based on the 992.2 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, it is the third chapter in the Heritage Design series, and its presence is undeniable.
The star of the show is the exclusive Olive Neo paint. I remember watching the promotional film for this car on our dealership screens, surrounded by the vibrant oranges and browns of the 70s, and being completely captivated by how this colour looks against the Satin Black accents. Every detail has a history. Those three black stripes on the hood? In the 70s, owners added those so they could be easily spotted in the rearview mirrors of cars they were about to overtake on the Autobahn. Then there’s the numbered "lollipop" on the door, a beautiful nod to the 1951 Porsche 356 SL Gmünd Coupe, the car that marked Porsche’s debut in international motorsport.
While its looks are vintage inspired, the performance is pure 2026. Producing 533 hp and hitting 0–100 km/h in a staggering 3.1 seconds. This is thanks to the 3.6-litre T-Hybrid boxer flat-six engine, featuring an electric motor integrated into the PDK transmission and an electrically assisted turbocharger. Just in time for Easter, the exterior is covered in "Easter Eggs." You’ll find the original 1963 Porsche crest displayed on the hood, wheel hubcaps, steering wheel, headrests, keys and key case. Tucked just before the wheel arches, is the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur badge. Reinstated in 2009, this emblem is a heartfelt homage to the legendary coachbuilders like Karmann and Reutter. It’s a small detail that carries a massive weight, signaling the bespoke craftsmanship and obsessive attention to detail that goes into every unique Porsche build. Look closer and you’ll see the Bronzite accents on the front and rear, which extend to the Sport Classic wheels. These are a modern-day tribute to the Fuchs wheels (pronounced "Fooks"), the very first forged aluminum wheels ever placed on a production sports car back in 1967 on the 911S. One of my absolute favorite details is the Heritage Design badge on the rear engine grille. It’s more than just an ornament; it’s a tribute to a legendary Porsche tradition. In the 1950s, this seal was a badge of honor, awarded only to a select group of Porsche 356 owners who proved their car's legendary reliability by surpassing the 100,000 km mark. Seeing it here on the Spirit 70 feels like a modern seal of excellence.
Stepping inside the Spirit 70 is like stepping into a time capsule. Even though the 70s were before my time, the interior captures everything great about that era. The Olive Neo/Black Pasha pattern (that famous "waving checkered flag" design) is prominent on the seats, dash and glove box lining. It first debuted on the 928 in 1977, and seeing it here feels right.
I’ve always believed the interior is the heart of a car’s personality. Despite all the cutting-edge tech, Porsche included a Sport Chrono stopwatch and instrument cluster with illuminated green numerals, a direct design styling cue from the original Porsche 356. It’s those tiny details that make you realize how much Porsche cares about its DNA. Seeing this car in person at our centre was a full-circle moment for me. We all see the adverts and the videos, but standing next to one of only 1,500 units worldwide reinforces just how exclusive this art form is. This 911 is a perfect mirror of where Porsche started and a bold vision of where they are going next. It’s a true collector’s dream. To me, this isn't just a car, it’s the benchmark of the soul and character that make the Porsche brand the absolute pinnacle.
